Hawaii Investigated for Point Shaving
Posted by:UPDATE: No criminal investigation being pursued as cops state there is not enough information. Probably just a desperate gambler who has been losing betting on Hawaii lately.
Here is an interesting tidbit about the University of Hawaii being investigated for point shaving. The Hawaii Police Department is investigating after the admissions office received an anonymous letter alleging point shaving on November 3rd. According to my database, Hawaii is 3-7-1 ATS this year including a cover over FCS school Cal-Davis. Hawaii has went 0-5-1 ATS in their last six games. Point shaving usually occurs when teams are favored by large amounts and play not to cover the spread. Although it is possible that players can intentionally lose games as favorites that they were supposed to win.
The most surprising score on Hawaii’s 2011 log is a 40-20 loss at UNLV as -17.5 point favorites. The ATS margin of 37.5 was Hawaii’s largest loss while it was UNLV’s largest ATS win and one of their two SU wins on the year along with a 3-point home win to Colorado St. Ironically, the Hawaii-UNLV game took place in Las Vegas, the sports betting capital of the world.
Hawaii is only 1-6 ATS as favorites vs FBS schools this year, winning and covering their opener against Colorado, and only winning two of the next six games they were listed as favorites while covering none.
For years, pro and recreational bettors always floated the idea that the referees in Hawaii home games were always slanted to the home team especially in those end of the year games where BCS schools from the mainland would visit. However, bettors who are always yelling “fix” when the play on the field doesn’t seem to go their way, have not mentioned anything about Hawaii games this year. Those involved in this industry on a daily basis usually hear the grumblings before investigations begin. More to come.
New Jersey Residents Want Sports Betting
Posted by:New Jersey residents passed an amendment to the State Constitution yesterday to allow Sports Betting in the State of New Jersey. The question on the ballot was worded as follows:
PUBLIC QUESTION NO. 1
CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT AUTHORIZING LEGISLATURE BY LAW TO ALLOW WAGERING ON SPORTS EVENTS AT ATLANTIC CITY CASINOS AND AT HORSE RACETRACKS.
Shall the amendment to Article IV, Section VII, paragraph 2 of the Constitution of the State of New Jersey, agreed to by the Legislature, providing that it shall be lawful for the Legislature to authorize by law wagering at casinos or gambling houses in Atlantic City and at current or former running and harness horse racetracks on the results of professional, certain college, or amateur sport or athletic events be approved?
INTERPRETIVE STATEMENT
A “Yes” vote on this question would allow the Legislature, when permitted by federal law, to legalize the placing of bets on certain sports events at casinos, racetracks, and former racetrack sites. Currently, federal law only permits this type of betting in Nevada and Delaware. It also occurs through illegal betting operations. If legalized in New Jersey, bets could be placed on professional, college, or amateur sports or athletic events, except that bets could not be placed on any college sports or athletic event that takes place in New Jersey or in which a New Jersey college team is playing.
With 91% of the precincts reporting, according to The Star-Ledger, there were 578,410 Yes votes and 315,692 No votes (65%-35% in favor of Yes). Although the federal law still must be overturned, and I am pretty sure the highly hypocritical NFL will still have a say in matters, a 2-1 vote by the people is a huge tool in the arsenal to fight this battle in court. After all, this country is governed by a Democracy and anything less than legalization at this point will be a complete failure by Government and a smack in the face to what all of our veterans have fought for throughout the years.
