The attached chart contains all of the records (SU and ATS) for the NFL head coaches in their NFL Preseason careers.  New for 2011 are totals since 1995.

The following are the SU preseason records of active coaches who have won Super Bowls:

Mike Shanahan 44-28 SU

Bill Belicheck 36-29 SU

Tom Coughlin 34-27 SU

Mike Tomlin 13-4 SU

Sean Payton 11-10 SU

Mike McCarthy 9-11 SU

Collectively, these coaches are a combined 147-109 SU, 57.4% in the pre-season.

The following are the SU preseason records of active coaches who have lost Super Bowls without winning a Super Bowl:

John Fox 18-18 SU

Lovie Smith 14-15 SU

Andy Reid 18-30 SU

Ken Whisenhunt 5-11 SU

Jim Caldwell 1-7 SU

Collectively, these coaches are a combined  56-81 SU, 40.9% in the pre-season.

Over the next month, you will hear about how unimportant winning these games are but after scouring this chart it makes you wonder if setting a winning tone in the preseason is an important component of winning a Super Bowl.  Of course this study is incomplete without looking at the coaches throughout the history of the NFL but this sure makes us think that maybe these games do mean something this week.
